What is a normalcy flag?

The normalcy flag is a symbol that alerts a provider as to whether or not a result falls outside of a reference range. It's impossible to memorize reference ranges for all lab tests, so the flag is used as an alert to providers that further evaluation may be needed. It’s also a helpful visual when reviewing a large volume of results.
